“The butterfly chrysalis is a mysterious thing. Inside one creature becomes an inky pool of DNA yet all the pieces come together and out emerges an entirely different creature while still holding onto its memories. How do I untangle myself from within it so something more just, beautiful, creative, and loving may emerge?”
Artist Laura Korynta had explored this inquiry while making Chrysal-us and invited the community to undergo the same process. Stepping inside the chrysalis lantern offers a moment to recognize and reflect on our own place within oppressive systems. In the recent OFFERINGS Live Pop-ups, people were invited to untie the fabric from the outside of the structure as an act of acknowledgement and commitment to the work necessary to transformation and by doing so reveal a dream for the future.
Chrysal-us will stand in Tamales y Bicicletas Urban Farm at 2819 15th Ave. through winter.

About the Artist
Laura Korynta is a multimedia artist who bumbled all around the state of Minnesota with her four siblings before landing in the silver city of St Paul, MN. She explores the narratives and folktales of women through the use of traditional and unconventional watercolor, paper sculptures, dioramas, and puppetry. Working at a smaller scale she invites viewers to have an intimate experience and be an active part of the lore making for the piece. Laura is inspired by the landscapes of Minnesota and her wanderings around the world. She has been a part of the Barebones Halloween Extravaganza since 2015 and 2019 Hing Artist Alumni.
