Kallie’s Community Build
Description
Call for Participants
Come join the Community Build Sessions for Making the Beyond Blood Float for the Oct 31 Procession and Festival!
Led by artists Kallie Melvin and Eva Adderley, Beyond Blood, our BareBones Procession Group, is destined to honor a broader and more expansive definition of ancestry, instead of limiting ourselves to only our blood ancestors. We want to honor adoptee’s ancestors, chosen family ancestors, unknown ancestors, animal ancestors, and all other ancestors. This Community Build will focus on creating symbolic decorative elements of the float.
Two Dates
Saturday, October 23, 11:30am – 1:30pm
Wednesday, October 26, 4:30-6:30pm
Who’s Invited
Anyone who is interested to join us in creating this float and celebrating our ancestors.
How to Participate
Create or share something to add to the float to honor your own ancestor(s), however that is defined by you! This is totally open-ended: it could look like bringing us a copy of a recipe from a loved one, a photograph or drawing of a loved one, or another object to attach to the float. It could also look like creating original art you make at one of our community build sessions.
Pick from 2 projects
Project 1: Make and decorate a picture frame / picture in honor of an ancestor or ancestor type of your choosing to place around the base of the float in an homage to the hidden falls ancestor tree that we ordinarily visit at barebones.
Project 2: Create a moth puppet in honor of an ancestor or ancestor type of your choosing that is grayscale on one side and colorful on the other side. The grayscale side will symbolize the connection to the spirit world while the colorful side will symbolize what the people they honor brought to the world when they were alive. Anyone who makes a moth puppet may walk with it in the procession, and keep it afterwards!
