Artist Statement for The Ice Maiden of Ampato by Artist Gustavo Boada: Why the mummy Juanita? Beyond the great anthropological discovery.
In these times of social upheaval, where we feel vulnerable and the guarantee of our human rights is threatened in our own neighborhoods. Now that we have been made to feel reduced in the social fabric of this country, we can empathize with those who were led by coercion, deception and violence to sacrifice their young lives. The silenced cry of these children and youth by layers of historical oblivion are framed by the Golden Greatness of Civilization.
I feel obliged to expose the grotesqueness of these crimes of our civilization that continues to use the most vulnerable (children, youth and women) and those who have been systematically subjected, exploited and abused. Juanita and all those children sacrificed in the Capacolla and all those rituals practiced by our civilizations are with us. They will march with us. Their cries will echo from the darkness of history to the present to encourage us to persevere in change.
¿Por qué la momia Juanita? Más allá del gran descubrimiento antropológico.
Declaración del artista para The Ice Maiden of Ampato
