Call for Music Co-Director

Description

BareBones Productions is seeking to hire two Music Co-Directors, applying separately or together, for the 2026 Halloween Extravaganza experience. They will work individually and collaboratively with performance Co-Directors, artistic/production staff, and community members from the end of August, through mid November. The Music Co-Directors will work with these communities to create a public performance/ritual related to grief, death, ancestors, loss, and remembering, to be performed over 4 nights. Performances will be located in Powderhorn Park at 3400 15th Avenue South.

Applicants applying as individuals will be paired with other applicants applying as individuals, which can impact the selection process.

Qualifications or Requirements

  • Strong instrumental and vocal music direction skills
  • Connection with local musicians and ability to recruit instrumental and/or vocal music volunteers
  • Willingness to learn, self-reflect, and grow in the areas of equity, inclusion, and anti-bias
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and strong communication, organization, and time-management skills

Must Work/Attend

  • August 19: orientation meeting (aka “BareBones Buildup”)
  • August - October:
    • staff storyboarding sessions
    • approximately 9 Sunday afternoon full cast rehearsals
    • conduct 2-3 weekly orchestra rehearsals
    • 4 educational workshops provided to the community by the BareBones Board
  • October 24 - 28: Tech week, work three out of five of these evenings from 4:00pm to 10:00pm, but need to keep all of these evenings available.
  • Oct. 29, 30, 31, Nov. 1, and a rain date of  Nov. 2: performances

Responsibilities Include

  • Collaborate with Co-Directors, Artistic team and volunteers to create a plan for incorporating music into a 45-60 minute performance which includes puppetry, music, fire, and stilting
  • Create original music/soundscapes in collaboration with staff/volunteer artists
  • Recruit and organize volunteer musicians
  • Organize and direct meetings and rehearsals for musicians
  • Support participating community members to grow as musicians/performers and expand their artistic confidence and skill sets
  • Manage communication between musicians and artistic/production staff
  • Direct music/manage needs of musicians during performances
  • Prioritize the physical and emotional safety of every participant
  • Participate in digital communication (email, text, phone) promptly
  • Participate in a variety of clean-up activities and final wrap-up survey
  • As this is a temporary, independent contractor position, candidates are required to have access to materials and technologies necessary for the job

Compensation

  • $1,000-2,000 depending on experience
  • BareBones Buildup attendance $50
  • Snacks or Meals at most meetings, builds, rehearsals
  • Access to request small funds for basic needs if needed to fully participate in BareBones duties

The BareBones Board/Hiring Committee wishes that we could pay more. We recognize compensation is more like symbolic appreciation rather than a livable wage. This show would not be possible without many people's in-kind donations (love hours).
