Description
BareBones Productions is seeking to hire two Co-Directors/Facilitators, applying separately or together, for the 2025 Halloween Extravaganza experience. Directors/facilitators bring experience and passion for puppetry and pageantry and an interest in honoring ancestors and making community space for grief. Directors, in collaboration with the Barebones Board of Directors, will facilitate a group of hired artists and community volunteers who work together through the months of August, September and October to create a public performance/ritual related to grief, death, ancestors, loss and remembering, to be performed 4 evenings between October 30 and November 3, 2025 at Powderhorn Park. The structure, location and budget for the Extravaganza have been designed by the Barebones Board of Directors. Co-directors & facilitators work within that structure to synthesize the visions, skills and interests of the hired staff and volunteers to create the Extravaganza.
Applicants applying as individuals will be paired with other applicants applying as individuals, which can impact the selection process.
Qualifications or Requirements
- One of the Co-Directors should have experience working or volunteering with BareBones Productions, including work on the Annual Halloween Extravaganza
- Strong performance, puppetry and/or visual art skills
- Experience creating large scale outdoor visual and performance art pieces
- Experience managing artistic staff
- Experience teaching, collaborating with, managing, and supporting a wide variety of community members, including folks of various ages, races, cultures, genders, family structures, abilities, spiritual beliefs, and who speak a variety of languages
- Strong communication, organization, time management, and leadership skills
- Access to the internet and the technologies necessary to complete job
- Adaptability and flexibility
- Willingness to learn, self-reflect, and grow in the areas of equity, inclusion, and anti-bias
Responsibilities Include
- Work with the board, hired artists and volunteers/community to facilitate the creation of a 45-60 minute performance including puppetry, music, fire and stilting
- Work with the hiring committee to hire all artistic staff
- Attend and help facilitate an all-day orientation meeting for staff August 2025 including the creation of community agreements amongst staff and collaborate on ways to maintain said agreements.
Create a storyboard with staff and community during August/September 2025 - Coordinate and manage artistic staff communication.
- Facilitate rehearsals in September and October 2025
- Facilitate weekly meetings with hired staff, including discussions regarding artistic direction of the show, production/logistic needs, and maintaining community agreements
- Engage with volunteers/community and assist with communication as needed
- Attend approximately 21 puppet building sessions–this can be split between co-directors
- Manage staff related issues in coordination with the board and production team
- Encourage community building through music, games and other activities at meetings, rehearsals and builds
- Work with the production manager and board to stay within budget
- Attend regular production meetings, artistic staff meetings, and when applicable, board meetings
- Work/attend 4 performances
- Participate in 4 educational workshops provided to the community by Barebones
- Prioritize physical and emotional safety of every participant including precautions related to Covid 19
- As this is a temporary, independent contractor position, candidates are required to have their own access to materials and technologies necessary for the job
Must Work / Attend
- BareBones Buildup 2025 : Collaborate with the 2025 team to create protocols that address interpersonal dynamics, safety, workload fairness, communication, and organization
- Artistic staff Storyboarding, Community Storyboarding, Build Site move, and Build Kick-Off
Build events, rehearsals, and additional meetings as scheduled by the Co-Directors, Artistic Team, and Production Team, per protocols developed at BareBones Buildup 2025. This will include approximately 9 Sunday afternoons, and 3 evenings between October 25-30, 2025. - Four performances to be held on October 30 and 31, November 1, and 2, 2025. Rain date will be November 3, if a performance is canceled due to weather.
- Tech week will be October 25 to November 3. Specific dates TBD depending on weather. All artistic and production staff will work three out of five of these evenings from 4:00pm to 10:00pm, but need to keep all of these evenings available.
