Description
BareBones Productions is seeking to hire a Lead ASL Interpreter for Performers for the 2025 Halloween Extravaganza who will work individually and collaboratively with BareBones Co-Directors, artistic/production staff, and community members from the end of August, through September and October, and into the beginning of November 2025. The Lead ASL Interpreter for Performers will work with deaf BareBones performers and the BareBones community to create a public performance/ritual related to grief, death, ancestors, loss, and remembering, to be performed over 4 nights. Performances will be located in Powderhorn Park at 3400 15th Avenue South.
Qualifications or Requirements
- Strong skills in theater or arts-related ASL interpretation
- RID certification preferred
- Ability to recruit, collaborate with, schedule, and provide direction to other ASL interpreters, both volunteer and paid
- Willingness to learn, self-reflect, and grow in the areas of equity, inclusion, and anti-bias
- Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills
- Adaptability and flexibility
Must Work/Attend
Non-Interpreting
- BareBones Buildup 2025 (Tuesday August 19, 6-9:30). Collaborate with the 2025 Team to create protocols to address interpersonal dynamics, safety, workload fairness, communication, and organization
- 1 or 2 Production meetings if requested
- Meetings/phone calls with ASL team as needed
Interpreting - can be shared with other recruited interpreters. Exact dates, hours, times to be determined in collaboration with BareBones Production Team and Deaf Community Members and within budget limits
- Community Storyboarding: Saturday September 6, 1-3
- Some puppet building workshop (dates/times TBD)
- All Sunday afternoon rehearsals: September 14, 21, 28, October 5, 12, 19, and 2 ( times, number of hours TBD)
- Tech rehearsals on two nights between October 26-28 (dates,times, number of hours TBD)
- Dress rehearsal October 29 (4 hours in tandem with 2nd interpreter)
- Performance nights October 30-November 3 (dates/times TBD)
- Educational workshops provided to the community by BareBones Board
Responsibilities Include
- Provide ASL interpretation to deaf BareBones performers, or schedule interpreters from the ASL team
- Collaborate with Volunteer Recruiter, Stage Manager, Teaching Artists, and Co-Directors to recruit, collaborate with, schedule, and provide direction to additional ASL interpreters
- Prioritize the physical and emotional safety of every participant
- Participate in digital communication (email, text, phone) promptly
- Participate in final wrap-up survey after November 4, 2025
- As this is a temporary, independent contractor position, candidates are required to have access to materials and technologies necessary for the job

Compensation
- $30 -$50/hr for interpreting hours, dependent on experience and certification
- BareBones Buildup attendance $50
- Snacks or Meals at most meetings, builds, rehearsals
- Access to request small funds for basic needs if needed to fully participate in BareBones duties
The BareBones Board/Hiring Committee wishes that we could pay more. We recognize compensation is more like symbolic appreciation rather than a livable wage. This show is only possible with many people's in-kind donations (love hours).
